The Serranía de los Yariguíes Integration Project is an innovative initiative aimed at addressing deforestation, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation in the Andean region. Spanning approximately 90,000 hectares, this project covers parts of the Serranía de los Yariguíes Natural Park and the municipalities of Simacota, Santa Elena del Opón, and Contratación in the Santander department in Colombia, benefiting around 900 families. Our goal is to create a sustainable and economically viable model for forest conservation, leveraging advanced technologies, innovative financial mechanisms, and strong community engagement.
This region, known for its rich biodiversity and ecological significance, faces severe threats from deforestation and land conversion for agriculture and livestock. The area stores approximately 270,000 tons of CO2, making its preservation critical for climate stability. Recent studies indicate alarming deforestation rates, driven by agricultural expansion and illegal logging, which underscore the urgent need for conservation efforts. The project aims to protect this vital carbon storage capacity and safeguard the region’s unique ecosystems. The project works closely with farmers’ associations and networks of local communities, fostering peace and integral development in areas previously affected by armed conflict in Colombia.
By supporting sustainable livelihoods and promoting environmental stewardship, we help reinforce the peace agreement and contribute to long-term stability. The region has also been impacted by illegal coca cultivation; our initiatives provide viable economic alternatives, reducing the likelihood of reverting to such activities.
Our approach integrates carbon credits, payment for ecosystem services, forest management certification, ecotourism, and philanthropy to make forest conservation a profitable and attractive option for local stakeholders. By using REDD+ methodologies with Verra and Cercabono standards for carbon credits as well as Forest Management Certification, we provide financial incentives for forest conservation. This not only benefits the environment but also offers local farmers and communities a sustainable way to improve their livelihoods.
We welcome stakeholders, including international organizations, to join our initiative. Together, we can develop accessible business models that allow any farmer to participate in these environmental services.
We deeply appreciate your support and commitment to our cause. Together, we are making a significant impact on the environment and ensuring a better future for all.
